Artist's Comments

Here is another Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess painting, this time of Princess Zelda.

This was quite a challenge for me, drawing all the detailed armour, jewelry and the sash that hangs from her dress, but I really wanted to give it a go, so I pressed on. Colouring this was so fun, getting to use all these different colours was great, and learning a little about cel-shading techniques by observing the original's colouring, but making it into cel-shading, and making it up as I go along.

Refining the sash pattern's lineart with a .7 pixel pen was a little daunting, as I had to erase a lot and try to make the lines darker and defined, but it was a good experience.

Drawn from an official Zelda artwork, courtesy of the Legends of Nintendo.
Lineart drawn in Open Canvas.
Painted in Photoshop CS.
Took about a week.

EDIT: I've finished the picture, painted the rest of her skirt and sword. ~blacksicanmofo asked if he could have my permission to use this painting for a tattoo he wants to get, and asked if I'd finish the rest of her dress for completeness, so I did!

Thanks so much for looking/commenting, hope you like it. :D

In order to stand a chance at winning a contest, I have to employ shading like this... how did you do it?
:iconbratchny:
A bit hard to explain - I used a non-airbrush paintbrush in Photoshop, varied sizes, from about a 3 to a 19. Set a base colour, then with the eyedropper tool I chose a shade a few shades darker than the base colour and painted the shaded areas, made another darker shade, painted the darker shades, then made a lighter shade, painted the highlights. I looked at the original painting to see where shade/light would go as a guide.
Used a big brush to make the large areas of shade/highlight, and zoomed in and used a smaller brush to make the shading smooth around the edges.
Hope that helps, I'm a bit tired so explaining things is kinda hard :P

Very nice!

you've managed to get the shading just right... and from the way you described it above doing it by hand? very good.

I tend to use the pen tool lots as i'm not too steady - considering i hold the tablet like paper while my laptop is on the bed... well i cant be bothered to clear off my desk :XD:

shes so pretty - love the armour

Thanks so much for your comment, and for faving :D
I've never really had a go at the pen tool, I reckon it'd make drawing the lineart ten times as quick, but I love doing lineart, so I'd rather take my time and do it manually. Zooming in to 400% helps to get the lines smooth, haha
I wasn't very steady when I first got my tablet 4 years ago, but with practice, you get better. :P

i tend to not use line art - i start with my sketch and colour over the lines :XD:

i do try though!

i still think its fantastic and i look forward to more !
